Questions
What is the difference between markup and margin?
Markup is profit as a percentage of cost. Gross margin is profit as a percentage of selling price. A product that costs $50 and sells for $100 has a 100% markup but a 50% gross margin.
What is the markup formula?
Markup % = (price − cost) ÷ cost × 100. Rearranged, price = cost × (1 + markup ÷ 100), and cost = price ÷ (1 + markup ÷ 100).
How is gross margin calculated?
Gross margin % = (price − cost) ÷ price × 100. If the price is below cost, the margin is negative.
